Oils of the Bible – He Provides

“There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise” (Proverbs 21:20).

Oils are referred to in the Bible over 300 times, and indirectly about 600 times.  We can learn a lot just from the few verses listed here. There are more references in the Bible.  I have found these to be the most common oils of today that were used in Biblical times.  I use all of these oils below and love them individually for the help they lend. Thank the Lord for His blessings of these precious oils.  *I could list more Bible references, but it’s honestly exhaustive – because it’s in there so many times.  

Sandalwood (Aloes)Numbers 24:6; Psalms 45:8 Proverbs 7:17; Song of Solomon 4:14; John 19:39: This oil is used to help skin care, can enhance deep sleep (stimulating release of melatonin); be supportive of female reproductive and endocrine systems; has been applied for urinary tract infections.

Cinnamon: Exodus 30:23 most powerful antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and antifungal oils of all.  Sexually stimulating and may help blood sugar.

Cedarwood Leviticus 14:4, 6, 49, 51, 52 Numbers 19:6 : Used as an insect repellent and to help hair loss, tuberculosis, bronchitis, gonorrhea, skin disorders (acne, psoriasis) and can deprogram misinformation and bring oxygen to cellular levels. Can enhance deep sleep (melatonin stimulant), emotional releases, and promote mental clarity.

Cypress Genesis 6:14; Isaiah 44:14; 41:19; I Kings 9:11; Song of Solomon 1:17 : Linked to helping arthritis, laryngitis, can help reduce scar tissue, cramps, cardiovascular system (increases circulation, helps strengthens blood capillaries and controls hemorrhages and nose bleeds, relieves acute chest discomfort), and is known to be emotionally beneficial.

Frankincense Exodus 30:34, Leviticus 2:1, 1, 15, 16; 5:11; 6:15; 24:7: Numbers 5:15; 16:46-50, I Chron 9:29, Nehemiah 13:5, 9; Song of Solomon 3:6; 4:6, 14 Isaiah 59:20; 60:3, 6, Matthew 2:11: can reprogram cellular memory thus promoting healing; can help maintain normal cellular regeneration; cancer, depression, allergies, headaches, bronchitis, herpes, tonsillitis, typhoid, warts, brain damage, massive head injuries, can stimulate body’s production of white corpuscles (immune builder).

Hyssop Exodus 12:22; Leviticus 14:4, 6, 49, 51, 52; Numbers 19:6, 18; I Kings 4:33; Psalm 51:7; John 19:29; Hebrews 9:19: Hyssop has been known to help relieve anxiety, arthritis, asthma, respiratory infections, parasites, sore throats, cuts and wounds, metabolize fat, increase perspiration, detox, and emotional balancing.

Myrrh Genesis 37:25; 43:11; Exodus 30:23; Esther 2:12; Psalms 45:8; Proverbs 7:17; Song Solomon 1:13; 3:6; 4:6, 14; 5:1, 5, 13; Matthew 2:11; 26:7, 9, 12; Mark 14:3, 4; Mark 15:23; Luke 7:37, 38, 46; 23:56; John 11:2; 12:3, 5; 19:39:  Used to help as an antiseptic, balancing to thyroid and endocrine system, helps supports immune system, bronchitis, diarrhea, thrush in babies and vaginal thrush, athletes foot, ring worm, viral hepatitis, chapped skin, wrinkles, and can be emotionally releasing.

Myrtle Nehemiah 8:15; Esther 2:7, Isaiah 41:19; 55:13; Zechariah 1:7-11: Used to help as a thyroid and general hormone balancer, soothing to respiratory system, decongestant, sinus infections, tuberculosis, colds, flu, coughs, bronchitis, asthma, skin conditions: acne, psoriasis, blemishes, and bruises.


Carrier oils of Bible times were: Primarily olive, but also almond.  Today most use coconut or jojoba.
